Visual & conceptual reference - Hellen van Meene

I became fascinated with Hellen van Meene's work - particularly her photographs of young adolescent girls - during my last project, in which I explored the idea of vulnerability.

I find her images captivating and the vacant stare of the young girl is almost slightly sinister. It is this 'sinister' element which I find intriguing - the way young girls can hold spooky and chilling connotations. It reminds me of certain horror films in which a young girl is used as the evil character. Furthermore, I admire the way van Meene captures the vulnerability of the young girls and the inevitable changes of becoming an adolescent.

It is these factors which draw me to photographing my younger sister, who is of a similar age; I have watched her change greatly over the past couple of months and I'm interested in documenting her transition between youth and adolescence, and the way that she is coping with this change following a car accident at the beginning of the year. The 'innocence' that she once had has quickly been replaced by puberty and the accompanying pressures of being a teen, although she is still extremely naive about the ways of the world.

The style that I plan to shoot in will be a mixture of documentary photography, as well as staged portraiture; I feel by combining the two I will be able to capture her transition into encroaching adolescence.
